SIXTIES ICON

SIXTIES-ICON-2

It was little shock that Sixties Icon was destined for great things on the racecourse. His pedigree (Galileo x Love Divine) ensured that he’d excel in his three year old campaign at middle distances, a statement proven by his emphatic victory in the St Leger of 2006. He may well have been a champion racehorse but it’s what he’s put in to his progeny that really made people take notice when his first crop of two year olds hit the track in 2012.

St Leger winners are often considered ‘stamina laden’ with their progeny expected to follow suit but Sixties Icon’s first crop defied that logic. Chilworth Icon took the Woodcote Stakes (Listed) and the Group 3 Premio Primi Passe with 50% of his sophomore runners returning to the winner’s enclosure.

Since then, Sixties Icon has consistently hit the headlines with Norman Court Stud homebreds Nancy From Nairobi winning the Group 2 Royal Heroine Stakes at Santa Anita and Czabo taking the Group 3 Park Express Stakes at the Curragh. In South America, Crazy Icon and Sixties Song have both recorded Group 1 victories to underline the fact that their sire is an individual whose depth of pedigree is capable of producing winners at all ages over distances ranging from five furlongs to fourteen furlongs and often beyond.

Sixties Icon is a very difficult sire to pigeon hole then. He usually improves his mares and indeed tends to compliment their own pedigrees. Sprint mares covered by Sixties Icon more often than not produce sprinters – a  pattern that continues as stamina takes over.

Nakeeta, the Ebor Handicap winner of 2017 proved that Sixties Icon produces tough and hardy progeny, the hallmark of all of his offspring, as the story both at home and Internationally, looks set to continue.
